Hemp hurd — also called shiv — cut to roughly half an inch. This is the woody inner core of the hemp stalk, left behind once the bast fiber has been stripped away.

Hurd is highly absorbent and light. The three things it is most used for: animal bedding, where the absorbency and low dust are the point; hempcrete, where hurd is the aggregate bound with a lime binder; and industrial absorbents for spills. It is also used as a garden mulch.
