Hemp clothing is made from the bast fiber of the industrial hemp stalk, spun into yarn and woven or knitted into fabric — usually blended with organic cotton, Tencel or recycled polyester to soften the hand and add stretch. A 55% hemp / 45% organic cotton jersey is the most common blend you will meet in a hemp t-shirt.

Why hemp fabric outlasts cotton

  • Stronger fiber. Hemp bast fiber has roughly three times the tensile strength of cotton, so seams and knees hold up.
  • Softens instead of wearing out. Repeated washing breaks down the pectin binding the fiber bundles, so the fabric gets softer while keeping its strength.
  • Breathable and moisture-wicking. The fiber is hollow and porous, so it moves moisture and air rather than trapping them.
  • Naturally antimicrobial. Hemp resists odor-causing bacteria, which is why it turns up in socks, base layers and travel clothing.
  • UV resistant. Hemp fabric blocks meaningfully more UV than an equivalent cotton weave.
  • Grown without much. Hemp needs no pesticides, far less water than cotton, and returns nutrients to the soil.

What counts as hemp clothing

There is no legal minimum, so a garment can be labelled hemp at almost any blend percentage. On AllHemp.com the fiber content is listed on the product page where the brand supplies it. If it matters to you, look for 40% hemp or higher — below that the hemp is doing very little for the hand or the durability.

How do you wash hemp clothing

Cold or warm machine wash, tumble dry low or hang. Hemp handles washing better than cotton and does not need special care. Skip fabric softener — it coats the fiber and slows the natural softening.

Does hemp clothing shrink

Pre-shrunk hemp and hemp blends shrink very little. Raw, unwashed hemp canvas or heavyweight woven hemp can shrink on the first hot wash, so wash cold the first time if the label does not say pre-shrunk.

Is hemp clothing itchy

Modern hemp apparel is not. The scratchy reputation comes from coarse, poorly retted fiber used in 1990s hemp goods. Today's yarns are finer and almost always blended, and they soften further with each wash.
