Collection: Hemp Fibers & Hurds
Hemp Fibers & Hurds — Raw, Natural & Incredibly Versatile
Hemp fiber is one of nature's most remarkable raw materials. Used for thousands of years across textiles, paper, rope, and construction, hemp fiber is experiencing a modern renaissance as industries seek sustainable alternatives to synthetic and resource-intensive materials.
Why Hemp Fiber?
- One of the strongest natural fibers on earth — stronger than cotton and flax
- Naturally resistant to mold, mildew & UV degradation
- Grows to harvest in just 90–120 days with minimal water & no pesticides
- Improves soil health through phytoremediation
- Biodegradable & fully compostable
- Versatile — used in textiles, composites, paper, insulation & more
Our Hemp Fiber Products Include:
- Raw hemp sliver & roving for spinning
- Hemp hurds (shiv) for construction & animal bedding
- Hemp bast fiber for industrial applications
- Hemp fiber for paper & nonwoven production
What Are Hemp Hurds?
Hemp hurds — also known as hemp shiv — are the woody inner core of the hemp stalk, separated from the outer bast fiber during the decortication process. Lightweight, absorbent, and highly versatile, hemp hurds are gaining widespread use across construction, agriculture, and animal care industries.
Benefits of Hemp Hurds
- Excellent insulation: Low thermal conductivity makes hurds ideal for hempcrete and other building applications
- High absorbency: Absorbs up to 4x their weight in moisture — perfect for animal bedding
- Carbon negative: When used in hempcrete, hurds sequester CO₂ over time
- Lightweight & low density: Easy to work with in construction and composite materials
- Natural & biodegradable: No synthetic additives, fully compostable at end of life
- Pest & mold resistant: Naturally inhospitable to insects and microbial growth
Common Uses for Hemp Hurds
- Hempcrete: Mixed with lime binder to create a breathable, insulating building material
- Animal bedding: Highly absorbent and low-dust bedding for horses, poultry, and small animals
- Mulch & garden amendment: Retains moisture and suppresses weeds in garden beds
- Composite materials: Used in bio-composite panels and packaging
- Paper production: A sustainable alternative to wood pulp
